As we cozy up in our warm blankets, sipping hot beverages in the comfort of our homes, it’s essential to remember the stray animals braving the harsh winter weather outside, urge animal activists and veterinarians.
“As temperatures drop, it’s crucial to show compassion for those without shelter, including our street animals. Simple acts of kindness, like providing blankets, food, and fresh water, can make a world of difference,” emphasised Dr. Piyush Patel, director and veterinarian at Humane Society International/India.
Dr. Patel also shared creative solutions for helping these vulnerable animals. He suggested repurposing old blankets, sweaters, boxes, crates, and cardboard to keep the animals warms and create makeshift shelters. “Insulate them with straw or hay to protect against the cold ground, and place them in familiar areas where animals often seek refuge. For birds, consider installing insulated birdhouses filled with leaves or hay,” he advised.
YouTuber and animal advocate Vidit Sharma, who through his NGO, Save a Stray has been engaged in feeding numerous stray dogs and cats daily, highlighted the severe impact of winter weather, particularly in the rainy regions of NCR, including Noida. “Winters are very harsh on these innocent lives. Surviving winter without food is a silent struggle for strays who have no one to rely on. Our feeding van ensures thousands of strays receive a warm meal, bringing them comfort in these harsh times. This is possible because of kind souls who love and support our mission, he added.
Yes, the growing overpopulation of stray animals remains a pressing issue, but effective sterilization initiatives are vital to addressing this challenge, say the activists.
Naina Krishen Pandita from the SWAG Foundation agreed with Sharma as she stressed that sterilization is the sustainable solution to reducing the stray population. “Instead of resorting to harmful measures or displacing these animals, we must advocate for sterilization and encourage local authorities to take action,” she stated.
Dr. Haravatar Singh, a senior veterinarian at the Charity Bird Hospital in Chandni Chowk, addressed the grim reality for stray dogs and birds during winter. “Struggling to find warmth and sustenance, these animals face illness, starvation, and malnutrition. Providing regular meals is essential for their survival and health, especially as they expend more energy trying to stay warm,” he noted.
Without adequate shelter, stray animals are at risk of severe health issues due to freezing temperatures. Birds, too, are affected, as natural food sources become scarce. Dr. Singh recommended scattering grains, seeds, or broken rice on rooftops or balconies to attract local bird populations desperately seeking food. He also emphasized the importance of providing fresh water, as many natural sources may freeze or become inaccessible.
Both Dr. Patel and Naina Krishen Pandita highlighted the need to raise awareness about the plight of stray animals. “Every stray deserves warmth and care. A little kindness goes a long way—be the reason a tail wags this winter!” they urged.
“Together, we can make a difference, because every act of kindness counts,” Pandita said passionately.
Underscoring the importance of community involvement in caring for these vulnerable creatures, animal lover Anjana Kashyap, a former government employee and resident of Mayur Vihar Phase 2, East Delhi emphasized the urgent need to consider where stray animals will find refuge during harsh weather. “These animals have no place to go. We must take responsibility for their well-being, especially during winter when they face extreme conditions. Every small action, from providing shelter to sharing food, can create a safe haven for them. It’s up to us to ensure they are not left to struggle alone.” Anjana asserted.
