In a significant step to enhance the digital healthcare infrastructure, the government launched the National Medical Register (NMR) portal on Friday. This new portal will serve as a comprehensive and dynamic database for allopathic (MBBS) registered doctors across India.
Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda inaugurated the NMR Portal of the National Medical Commission (NMC) in the presence of Union Ministers of State Anupriya Patel and Prataprao Jadhav, who joined virtually. The launch aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to strengthen India’s digital capabilities, emphasizing that a robust health ecosystem is integral to this vision.
Speaking at the event, Nadda said, “the Prime Minister’s vision is to make India digitally sound and that can happen if the health ecosystem is also digitally sturdy. The National Health Register is a much-awaited step in this direction that will strengthen the digital healthcare ecosystem and will ensure quality healthcare to the people of India”.
He further added that the National Medical Register will be upgraded and augmented with continuous improvements in the registration process on the portal.
The NMR is integrated with the Aadhaar ID of doctors, ensuring their authenticity and creating a reliable health database. Minister Nadda highlighted that the portal will continuously evolve, improving the registration process and contributing to quality healthcare.
State Medical Councils (SMCs) play a crucial role in the development and maintenance of the NMR, and Nadda urged them to actively participate in and expedite the registration process. Their efforts in authentication will be pivotal for the success of the NMR.
The government is also planning to introduce similar registers for paramedics and other healthcare professionals. Union Minister Patel emphasized that the NMR will address the issues of scattered and outdated data by providing a streamlined, authentic registration process. Patel stressed the importance of accurate data for improving healthcare services.
Minister Jadhav noted that the NMR portal will provide dynamic and consolidated data on doctors, fostering transparency and quality in the medical profession. This transparency is expected to build public trust in the healthcare system by ensuring access to verified information.
All the MBBS doctors who are already registered on the Indian Medical Register (IMR) have to register again on the NMR of the NMC. To start the registration, the doctor needs to keep ready a digital copy of the Degree (MBBS) Certificate, the Registration Certificate of the State Medical Council/Medical Council of India, where the doctor got first-time registration. The doctor must also have the Aadhaar number ready to start the process. The link for the registration in NMR is https://nmr-nmc.abdm.gov.in/nmr/v3/
